covid 19 coronavirus cases in karnataka physiotherapy rehabilitation program can improve your health

Do You Know Physiotherapy Helps You In Post Covid-19 Rehabilitation?

Covid 19 & Physiotherapy Rehabilitation program is becoming important day by day as coronavirus cases in Karnataka , India is rapidly increasing.

My name is J Mazumdar and I’m the senior consultant physiotherapist, CEO, and founder of Pro Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre, Bangalore. I’m responsible for helping patients with lung disease recover and get back to their lives both with regard to self-care and physical mobility.

Pro Physiotherapy has a longtime commitment to patients with chronic lung disease rehabilitation. Our pulmonary program started in the 2017s. Covid-19 patients tend to have the same problems as our patients with chronic lung disease.

However, in that particular case, these covid-19 patients have something to look forward to and that they are going to recover so that’s the biggest difference that I have seen is that our patients with post-covid-19 are recovering.

And they’re going home to the physiotherapy that we render to these patients will help them overcome breathlessness, fatigue, increase their stamina, improve their physical performance, and subsequently their quality of life. Patients at the time of discharge are given a follow-up plan.

Many times the patients might receive home care physiotherapy for a short period of time while they’re self quarantining at home. And then they’ll receive a home visiting physiotherapist for home physiotherapy. After a few days for patients who move beyond home physiotherapy, they refer to our outpatient clinic where they can start undergoing pulmonary rehabilitation under the supervision of our physiotherapists.

We have a large group of skilled physical therapists who are trained and have experience in taking care of patients recovering from a long illness. It’s one of the few physiotherapy rehabilitation clinics that has a full-time cardio-pulmonary physiotherapist.

On staff and I serve as sort of the senior to the physiotherapist and I established a template intellectual framework for the staff to push the patients forward so by having a distinct plan, specifically geared to patients with lung disease.

I think we provide the best opportunity for both the post-covid patients and the non-covid patients to progress. I think we add value to the process patients do get better with good care, no matter where it’s given and I think having a dedicated pulmonary physiotherapy program ( Covid – 19 & Physiotherapy Rehabilitation) sets us apart.

Physiotherapy Exercises Related to Pulmonary conditions including Covid-19.

As we all know this pandemic Covid-19 is mainly affecting the respiratory system of our body leading to complications such as pneumonia, breathlessness, and other respiratory disorders. Here I would brief some of the breathing exercises that are helpful in mild to moderate and suspected Covid-19 cases.

Here we are going to discuss few breathing exercises which will help you in relieving the breathlessness, reducing the breathlessness, preventing pneumonia, and further hospitalization.

Firstly, Pursed Lip Breathing, to start pursed-lip breathing, inhale/breath in slowly through your nostril for two counts, remember that your mouth closed. Take a natural normal breath. “Purse” or pucker your lips just like you were going to whistle and exhale/breathe out. You repeat it again. I’ll repeat it again inhale through the nose, exhale/breath out through the mouth as far as possible, that is your first exercise.

What does pursed lip breathing helpful? Corona virus cases in Karnataka.

Pursed lip breathing

Improves ventilation.
Relieves shortness of breath.
Prolongs exhalation to slow the breathing rate.
Keeps the airways open for a longer duration and decreases the workload of breathing.
Improves the patterns of breathing by moving old air out of the lungs and it helps to allow for new air to enter the lungs.
Releases trapped air in the lungs.
Causes general relaxation.

Diaphragmatic Breathing: The diaphragm is actually a primary inspiratory muscle. You need to train the diaphragm muscle a lot to prevent breathing problems. In diaphragmatic breathing, you just put one hand on the abdomen and another hand on the chest.
Inhale deeper so that your abdomen will bloat out and exhale through the mouth so that your abdomen will sink in. You have to give really deep attention during this exercise. Repeat it again 5 to 10 times.

The next exercise would be the balloon exercise. This will be really helpful for elderly individuals. In with this what you have to do is just blow out and then inhale through the nose .blow out again the balloon and inhale through the nose. You have to blow out and inhale/breath in through the nose, blow out, and inhale/breath in through the nose. Repeat this exercise 5 to 10 times at least.

Then other exercise water and straw. This is also similar to the balloon-type exercise, you have to take some water in a glass and take a straw and then first blow out the water by using the straw so that the water bubbles will form and then inhale through the nose. Repeat it 5 to 10 times.

Your next exercise would be the spirometer. This will really help you to increase and improve your lung volumes and your lung capacity.spirometer-breathing-exercise-coronavirus-cases-in-karnataka

Here we have 600cc, 900cc, and 1200cc which will help you according to your lung capacity. How much you’re able to lift this will also encourage you by giving you visual feedback.

How to do this is just put the mouthpiece inside your mouth and inhale deeper so that according to your capacity will be able to lift one or two balls and exhale out, just remove the mouthpiece and exhale out through the mouth.

This is a very important exercise, especially during this pandemic covid-19 situation. You can easily get it in any pharmacy store and use it to improve your lung capacities.

The next exercise would be your breath-holding exercise. You have to inhale for three seconds by the nose, hold the breath or pause the breathing for four seconds, and exhale for five seconds through the mouth. Repeat it again in the same manner.

I hope you all understood these exercises and I would suggest you repeat these exercises three times a day and do for 5 to 10 repetitions each and do regular normal stretching and some mild strengthening exercises, drink plenty of water, wash your hands, stay healthy, stay safe. Stay away from crowded places as coronavirus ( covid 19) cases are continuously increasing in Bangalore, Karnataka,

Cardiopulmonary physical therapy is a sub-specialty within the field of physical therapy. Clinicians working in this area of physical therapy focus on optimizing physical function for those with cardiopulmonary disease.

Common Patient Diagnoses.
Cardiopulmonary PT focuses on the treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary patients. Of these patients, some typical diagnoses may include:

post-myocardial infarction.
Post coronary bypass surgery.
coronary stent placement.
Heart valve replacement.
Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Recently added post-Covid-19 rehabilitation as coronavirus cases in Karnataka , especially in Bangalore rapidly increasing.

There are of course many more patient diagnoses referred for physical therapy services.

Cardiopulmonary therapists typically treat patients on an outpatient basis.

However, therapists working in an inpatient setting will also work with this patient population.

In the inpatient setting, patients are likely referred to physical therapy for initial activity following physician clearance.

Therapists working with these patients will have to closely monitor a patient’s vitals, especially if it soon after a major cardiac event and in case of serious Covid-19 cases.

Depending on the hospital, therapists may be expected to follow specific cardiac pathway protocols.

Therapists are also heavily involved in patient discharge planning to ensure the patient has everything needed after leaving the hospital.

In the outpatient setting, therapists work with patients following an acute cardiac event.

Therapists work with the patient to incorporate long-term lifestyle changes including exercise steps to reduce risk factors & prevent or help post covid -19 patients .
