Plica Syndrome

Plica is an extension of the synovial membrane, a thin slippery tissue that lines the knee. The joint is lubricated by the fluid of the synovial membrane. Plica Syndrome is a condition that occurs when the synovial membrane becomes irritated or the plica becomes enlarged. It may be a result of repetitive friction to the plica caused as a result of overexerting the knee joint.

Causes Of Plica Syndrome

Repetitive Activities: Repetitive activities such as running or climbing stairs which involve straightening and bending the knee can put stress on the plica.
Blunt trauma or twisting of the knee: It can cause the synovial tissue around the plica to swell up and cause pain.
Knee injury: Knee injuries such as Meniscus Tears can thicken the Plica and lead to the condition.
Structural abnormalities: Structural abnormalities in the hip or foot increase tension on the knee, causing friction.
Muscular Imbalances: Muscular imbalances in the quadriceps, hamstrings can also cause Plica Syndrome.

Symptoms Of Plica Syndrome

Knee pain: Pain in the knee after sitting for a long time or doing prolonged physical activity.
Snapping sensation: There may be a cracking sensation while bending the knee.
Swelling: Swelling may be seen in the knee after exercising.
Weakness of the knee: Weakness may be felt in the knee while walking or running.
Altered mobility of the kneecap: The range of motion of the kneecap may be considerably reduced.

Diagnosis Of Plica Syndrome

A physiotherapy doctor may physically examine the patient by assessing the movement, i.e. watching the walk, squat as well as strength of other joints such as hip or foot. He may conduct imaging tests such as X-rays and MRI to determine the severity of the condition.
