It is recommended that you wear loose fitting clothing to all sessions. Shorts are useful for back and lower limb problems. Vest tops are useful for neck and upper limb problems. Your physiotherapist may require you to partially undress to assess and treat your problem appropriately, however if you are uncomfortable with this you should just say so.
It is your choice if you would like to bring a friend or family member in the treatment room with you. Children and babies are also welcome, however you may want to consider this carefully, as they can add a distraction to your session.
On the initial visit you will undergo a thorough assessment. This begins with a talk about the problem and your general health. You will then have a physical assessment which will help identify the affected tissues. The assesment findings will be discussed with you, you will recieve a relevant treatment session along with some exercises for home and advice on managing your condition.
This will depend on what your problem is, how long you have had it and what you wish to achieve from physiotherapy. One session will be sufficient if diagnosis, a single treatment, advice and specific exercise is what you would like. Or you may find that you benefit from attending more than one treatment session. Anything spoken about in the consultation room is confidential and will not be discussed with anyone outside the medical profession. There may be times when I feel information should be passed on to your physician or other health professionals, but I will speak to you about this and it will not be done without your knowledge and consent. You should bare in mind that this is also the reason I am unable to discuss your specific problem if I see you in a public place.
