Neurodegenerative Diseases – The Most Dangerous and Incurable Diseases?

Neurodegenerative Diseases:

Contact Pro Physiotherapy, top physiotherapy clinic in Bangalore for neurological cases, especially for Parkinson's disease and Lou Gehrig's disease. There are many different neurodegenerative disorders, but they will often produce very similar symptoms to one another, making it difficult to distinguish between them and make a definitive diagnosis.

This is especially difficult in the early stages of the diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases occur as a result of the nerve cells, or neurones, in the brain and spinal cord breaking down, losing function and changing structure.  Due to the similar nature of these conditions, it is hoped that advances in treatment for one of them may also be applied successfully to others.

However, at present there are no cures for any neurodegenerative condition; although a range of treatments do exist, these are primarily intended to slow the progression of the disorder and reduce the symptoms that are being experienced.  The lost functions and neurones cannot be restored at the moment, using current treatment methods.

One of the most common neurodegenerative disorders is Parkinson’s disease.  This condition occurs as a result of the dopamine-producing cells breaking down and dying, meaning that insufficient levels of this important neurotransmitter are being produced.  The most effective way to treat this condition is to use a drug called levodopa, which the body converts into dopamine.  While this does not restore the function of the cells, it can be useful in alleviating the symptoms. Lou Gehrig disease (also known as motor neurone disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a much rarer neurodegenerative condition.  It occurs when the motor neurones (nerve cells that transmit a signal from the brain or spinal cord to the muscles) degrade, and are no longer able to transmit these signals.  Over time, this leads to the wastage of the muscles and paralysis is the eventual result.  The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, or CNS, which co-ordinates the responses.  Lou Gehrig disease is now thought to have a genetic basis.

Obesity is one of the risk factors, but this can be avoided by the majority of people.  Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes may also increase the risk of developing symptoms, so if you haven’t already done so, it would be advisable to cut down your intake or stop completely.  However, although these changes can reduce your risk, it does not guarantee that you won’t develop a neurodegenerative condition.

There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing a neurodegenerative disorder.  These include some that can be addressed by the patient, and others that cannot be changed.  The biggest risk factor for any of these conditions is age; they are all much more commonly seen in older adults.  Some have a genetic aspect, which means that if you have a family history of the condition, you are at a greater risk than someone whose family is unaffected.

Lifestyle can also play a role in the onset of some neurodegenerative diseases.  In order to reduce the risk of developing one of these conditions, it is important to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, as these will make it easier for you to maintain a suitable weight.
